The latest in a long line of many competitors to offer something that they claim has a right to the ambiguous title, South Korean technology giants Samsung have in this instance managed to avoid immediately simultaneous competition with rivals LG with the reveal of their 110-inch ‘Ultra HD’ smart TV set.
Revealing their new ‘UHD’ set a whole digit on the ‘year’ column earlier than anticipated, Samsung have perhaps stolen a march on their local rivals by showing their product a week in advance of the previously-intended launch site of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2014) in Las Vegas (USA) next week from 7-10 January.
The set itself is noted as holding a ’110-inch display’ capable of displaying native images on a screen size of 2.6m by 1.8m, the size making it a difficult fit for most households.
Planned to be ‘formally showcased’ at the CES next week, the new set enters the ‘Samsung UHD’ line alongside an existing ’85-inch’ version revealed at CES 2013, with the former due to enter the market for sale in China, select areas of Europe, and the ‘Middle East’ markets as of Monday (7 January), presumably set to be offered much higher than the launch price of the latter (which opened at $40,000), with early rumours suggesting a mammoth $150,000 listing.
With intentions to launch the product in a ‘wider range of markets’ after a period of 9 weeks, will they be able to become the most marketable TV of its newly-created and highly-expensive market? There is as always one two-letter name they should be aware of considering they have now put their challenger out in the open…
