The highly-anticipated ‘flexible OLED screen’ technology from Samsung (‘Youm’) is believed to have hit a slight snag, after reports emerging from the company claim that part of the development process has faced recent issues.

samsung_youm_flexidisplay_launch_cesThe reports coming from news sources in the company’s native country of South Korea are suggesting that they have come to face issues surrounding the format’s ‘encapsulation technology’ in the manufacturing process.

The use of ‘encapsulation technology’ is designed to protects the screen of the device from damage by ‘moisture’, though a patent purchased by Samsung from Vitex Systems is seen as one which is ‘too time-consuming’ for them to put into the new phone line in time for release, so are attempting to make do with more implementable systems currently at their disposal.

Alongside this process of fixing technology bugs, Samsung are also claimed to be beginning experiments towards ‘reducing the length of the manufacturing process’ before actual production of their flexi-screens start.

A public statement from Samsung Display on the matter (released by etnews) read: “As we have accumulated expertise in this field, progress is being made in substrates as well as encapsulation technology. We have developed a new technology than can shorten the encapsulation process to less than 2 minutes by using the Vitex System-developed encapsulation technology.”

Set to be implemented on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 device, amongst others, it is currently unclear when the Windows-backed products will be released, but will it be doing so as a slightly more imperfect system than many would have imagined the flexi-screen breakthrough to be?
